기본적인 하나 둘 셋 넷 (One, two, three, four)하는 수들을 기본 수, 즉, [기수]라 칭한다.

첫째 둘째(First, Second) 하는 순서를 나타내는 수들을 순서의 수, 즉, [서수]라 칭한다.

알아야 할 것은, 

One이 제외된 two 이상의 기수 뒤에는 주로 복수가 와야 하며,

First를 비롯한 second 이상의 서수 뒤에는 주로 단수가 온다는 것이다.

다음 표현들을 통해 확인하라.

매일 - every day

매 이틀마다 - every other day / every two days /every second day

매 삼일마다 - every three days /every third day

twice나 three times, four times등은 그 횟수를 나타낼 수도 있고,

as-as 앞에 쓰여 정도나 양이 몇 배임을 나타낼 수도 있다.

 

 

① two →  twice                That house is twice as large as this one.

                                (저 집은 이 집보다 두 배는 크다.)

② two →  twice                I have been to Kwangju twice.

                                (나는 광주에 두 번 가 보았다)

③ three → three times         I have three times as many books as he.

                               (나는 그보다 세배나 많은 책을 가지고 있다.)

 

 

4. 수, 양을 나타내는 형용사

 

1) a good many people supported him. (상당히 많은 사람들이 그를 지지했다.)

2) He spent a great amount of money. (그는 상당한 양의 돈을 썼다.)

3) Not a few people denied the fact.  (적지 않은 사람들이 그 사실을 부정했다.)

4) She has quite a little money.  (그녀는 적지 않은 돈을 가지고 있다.)

숫자 표현은 정말로 등잔 밑이 어두운 어려운 부분이므로,

따라서 출제가 잘 되니, 반드시 숙지하라.

1) 정해진 수를 세는 법

 

hundred/thousand/million/billion/trillion/dozen 등의 수사는

그 앞에 특정 숫자가 있을 때 그 숫자와 함께 형용사가 되어

명사의 성격이 사라지므로 ‘-s’를 붙일 수 없다.

예) three thousand students (3천명의 학생들), two hundred students(2백 명의 학생들)

 

 

2) 대충 세는 방법

 

앞에 특정 숫자가 없어 불특정다수를 표현하는 말에는

수사와 명사 사이에 [-s of] 표현을 반드시 사용해야 함을 명심하라.

 예) thousands of people (수천명), hundreds of people (수백명)

 

*  옳은 표현 찾기

 

1) Thousands of students throughout the world. ....................................................(옳음)

2) Three thousand students throughout the world.....................................................(옳음)

3) Thousand of students throughout the world........................................................(틀림)

4) Three thousands students throughout the world..................................................(틀림)

5) Three thousand of students throughout the world..............................................(틀림)

6) Three thousands of students throughout the world. ..........................................(틀림)
