가정법과 직설법의 혼합 구문

{Raoul's Point}

조건절의 접속사 If 가

but (that) , except (that), only (that), save (that) 등으로 바뀐 경우에는,

그 뒤는 가정법이 아닌 직설법을 쓴다.

즉, 주절은 가정법 형태로, 부사절은 직설법 형태로 쓰인 혼합문이 된다.

[   .... 조동사과거 V /have + p.p. ...., but  S  +  V .]

 

 

1) 가정법 과거

- I would come only but (that) I'm engaged to dine out.

 (-지금- 나는 가고 싶지만, 외식 약속이 있다.)

= I would  come       if       I were not engaged to dine out.

 (-지금- 나는  갈 것이다, -지금- 외식 약속이 없다면,)

2) 가정법 과거 완료

- I would have replied but (that) he stopped me.

 (-과거에- 나는 대답했을 것이지만, -과거에 -그가 나를 제지했다.)

= I would have replied if he hadn‘t stopped me.

 (-과거에 -나는  대답했을 것이다, -과거에- 그가 나를 제지하지 않았다면.)

F. 관용 용법

 

1) It is (about, high) time +  가정법 과거 -당연, 필요, 재촉, 마땅함

- It is (high) time we were off.

= It is time we should be off.

= It is time for us to be off.

   (우리가 갈 시간이다.)

2) Oh (O) that + 가정법 과거, 과거 완료

- Oh that he were here with us!

= Would that he were here with us!

= If only he were here with us!

= I wish he were here with us!

 (-지금- 그가 우리랑 함께 있기를 바래!)
