4. observance, observation 의 구별
동사 observe가 '보다'(view, watch)와 지키다, 준수하다(respect or follow laws, rules or customs)의 의미로 쓰이기 때문에 이 단어에는 명사형이 두 개가 있다.
observance는 '준수', '행사의 경축'(the celebration of an event)을 의미하고 observation은 '관찰'을 의미한다.
TOEIC Part 6에서 이 둘 간에 혼동을 유발하는 문제가 최근에 출제되었다.
(ex) The observance of Independence day includes fireworks and patriotic speeches.
(독립기념일의 경축행사에는 불꽃놀이, 애국적인 연설이 포함된다)
The soldier climbed the church tower for observation of the whole city.
