분리 부정사 (Split Infinitive)
※ 부정사를 수식하는 부사가 본동사를 수식하는 것으로 혼동되지 않도록 [to + 부사 + 동사원형] 식으로 나타내는 부정사이다.
- We didn't want you to even speak to him.
(우리는 네가 그에게 심지어 말하는 것조차 원치 않는다.)
- He failed to entirely understand it.
(그는 전적으로 그것을 이해하지 못했다.)
- She refused to either admit or deny the scandal.
(그녀는 스캔들을 인정하지도 부정하지도 않았다.)
- He agreed calmly to discuss the matter.
(그는 그 문제에 토론을 하기로 조용히 동의했다.)
- He agreed to calmly discuss the matter.
(그는 그 문제를 조용히 토론하기로 동의했다.)-
6. 분리 부정사는 피할 것 (Don't Split Infinitives Awkwardly!)

분리 부정사란 용어의 뜻은 그렇게 중요한 사항은 아니다.
부사 위치가 To 와 동사의 사이에 오느냐,
앞에 오느냐에 따라 의미차이를 가져온다는 것인데,
이런 문법용어 보다는,
부사는 가까이에 있는 동사를 수식한다는 것만, 생각하면 된다.
비슷한 예로,
[such a 형 명 + that 절] , [so 형 a 명 + that 절]의 구조가 있겠다.
예) He is such a gentle man that she likes him.
- 그는 아주 신사라서 그녀가 좋아한다.
............>> such는 관사와 유사한 성격이라 형용사 gentle과 같이 안 쓰인다.
예) He is so gentle a man that she likes him.
- 그는 아주 신사라서 그녀가 좋아한다.
......>> so는 부사라서 형용사 gentle 바로 앞에 쓰인다.
- I tried not to carefully hurt the kitten. (Awkward -어색함)
(나는 새끼 고양이를 주의 깊게 다치게 하지 않으려고 애썼다???)
..>> 위 문장은 문법적으로 하자는 없으나, 의미가 맞지 않고 불필요한 구조이다.)
- I tried not to hurt the kitten carefully. (Clear-분명함)
(나는 주의 깊게 고양이를 다치게 하지 않으려고 애썼다.)
