13. Korean Basic- Subject Affix

* Affix like one of 은, 는, 이, 가 makes the noun the subject of a sentence.

But the meaning is rather different. Let me give you some examples and explain.

As mentioned in the 12th lecture, in 1 and 3, you can notice

that 개들을 is used as an object of the sentence.

But in 2 and 4, 개를 is used as an object of the sentence.

을 is used after the consonant sound, [ㄹ] at 들 ,

and 를 is used after the vowel sound [ㅐ] at 개.

In 1, 은 is used to make 새들 the subject of a sentence,

while in 2, 는 is used to make 새 the subject of a sentence.

So, 은 is used after the consonant sound [ㄹ] at 들,

and 는 is used after the vowel sound [ㅐ] at 새.

In 3, 이 is used to make 새들 the subject of a sentence,

while in 4, 가 is used to make 새 the subject of a sentence.

So, 이 is used after the consonant sound [ㄹ] at 들,

and 가 is used after the vowel sound [ㅐ] at 새.

The difference in meaning is like this.

If you use 은 or 는 in a sentence, it means general situation.

If you say that 나는 너를 사랑한다,(=I love you.),

it means my general mind toward you.

On the other hand,

if you use 이 or 가 in a sentence, it means specific situation.

If you say that 내가 너를 사랑한다.(=It is I that love you.),

it means that my specific mind toward you, not general.

- Exercise -

(= Jerry likes Tom.)

나. Put 이 or 가 in each blank correctly.

(=It is Tom that likes Jerry.)

(=It is Jerry that likes Tom.)
