한밤중에 목이 말라,

(=At midnight, feeling thirsty, and)

냉장고를 열어보니,

(=opening the refrigerator,)

 

한 귀퉁이에 고등어가

소금에 절여져 있네.

(= after being salted.)

 

어머니 코고는 소리,

(=Mother's snoring sound)

조그맣게 들리네.

어머니는 고등어를,

구워주려 하셨나보다.

소금에 절여놓고

편안하게 주무시는구나.

(=She is sleeping comfortably.)

고등어구일 먹을 수 있네.

(=can eat roasted mackerels.)

 

어머니는 고등어를

절여놓고 주무시는 구나
