2008년 4월 17일, 나는 '21세기 중동과 이슬람 문화의 새로운 이해'라는 주제로 한국의 이슬람학자인 이희수 교수의 강연을 들었다.

 I heard Hee Soo Lee's special lecture, who is an Islamic scholar, which is entitled 21st century a new understanding of the Middle East and Islamic culture in April 17, 2008

>> I listened to Professor, Lee, Hee-soo's lecture, expert in Islam on April 17, 2008. . His lecture was focused on the new understanding of the Middle East and its culture of the 21st centurty.   

 

 

사실 중동과 이슬람이라고 하면 석유와 끊이지 않는 전쟁 그리고 오일머니 정도 떠올렸다.

The word Middle East and Islamic culture evoked images of abundant oil resources, perpetual big and small wars and oil money.

>> I have usually got the impression of Islam with endless wars and oil money.

 

 

 

강연이 매우 지루 할 것이라 예상되었지만 그것은 사실 꽤 흥미롭고 유익하였다. 특히 나는 중동과 이슬람에 대한 오해와 편견에 근거한 내 견해가 잘못되었다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

I expected it to be boring and confusing, but it was actually quite interesting and instructive. especially, I confessed that I was wrong in my views based on misconception and prejudice about the Middle East and Islamic culture.

 

>> I thought the lecture would be boring, but it was very informative fascinating. I found out that my exiting understanding about them was wrong. 

 

 

그러면서 나는 중동과 이슬람에 대한 강한 호기심을 느꼈고 내가 할 수 있는 것인지에 대해 고민하였다.

Then, I was excited by the Middle East and Islamic culture and I thought what can I do about that?

>> Then, I got curious about them, and started to think about what I could do.

 

 

그 해답은 강연자의 입에서 나왔다. "현재 한국의 이슬람법학자가 절대적으로 부족합니다."

The answer fell from his lips. "There is a national shortage of moulvi"

>> The answer was his voice. He said that there was not enough human resources about Islamic laws.

 

그 한마디에 나는 나의 무릎을 쳤다.

At that word, I slapped my knee saying, yeah, that's it!?.

>> When I heard it, I coulnd't agree with him more!

 

당시 법대 1학년인 나를 이슬람법학자를 꿈꾸게 한 계기였다.

It was a chance to dream of moulvi, when I was a freshman

>> At that time, I wa a freshman of a college in law, and decided to be a specialist in Islamic laws.

.....................moulvi라는 단어를다 알고 있으면 쓰고 없으면 풀이를..

 

현재 이슬람권 유학 및 아랍어 어학 연수를 계획 중이다.

I'am planning a trip to go study to Muslim and Arabic language program

>> Now I am plannig to study abroad, in Islamic countries.

 

특히 얼마 전 내가 다니는 대학과 King Saud University가 교류협정을 맺었다는 것을 알았다.

Lately, I knew that my school has established an academic tie with a King Saud University in the UAE

>> Lately, I noticed that my college has agreed to help each other with King Saud University in the UAE.

 

학부 졸업과 기본적인 아랍어 공부가 마무리 된 후 UAE의 King Saud University에서 이슬람법을 배우고 싶다.

After graduating from college and studying basic Arabic, I want to study the sharia at King Saud University in the UAE.

>> 주절을 I want to learn about Islamic laws there.로 수정.. 

 

여유가 된다면 이슬람 금융기법까지 배우고 싶다.

If i have a chance, I want to study Shariah-Compliant.

>> Given time, I also want to study about the monetary techiniques of Islam.

앗.. 밑에 두 문장은 영작을 부탁드리겠습니다. ㅠㅠ 이거하는데만 2시간 넘게 걸려서... 시험기간이라..

아참 이게 영문자기소개서인데요 제가 처음이라 형식을 잘모르겠는데 얼추 맞는건지 궁금하네요. ㅠㅠㅠ

그곳에서 배운 학문적 지식을 바탕으로 한국에서 이슬람법학자로서 후학들을 양성할 계획이다.

>> In my later days, I want to teach my future students my Islamic laws, as an islamic Law Specialist in Korea.

 

나는 이슬람법에 대한 진지한 고찰이야말로 한국과 UAE간은 진정한 동반자적 관계를 가지는데 더없이 신뢰되는 도구가 될 것이라 확신한다.

>> I am sure that serious reflections on Islamic laws will be a good tool for the relationship of Korea and UAE.

제 시각에서 볼 때 학생의 문제는

스스로의 생활에 대해선

자신감을 가지고 스타일리스트로의 멋진 모습을 가꾸고자 애쓰는 것 같으나,

영어식 사고 와 그 문체 내지는,

영문 작성 시의 주의점들에 대해서는 멋진 모습을 가꾸는 노력이 좀 아쉽지 않은가 하는,

그런 모습입니다.

 

 

어려운 전문 용어들은 보통 or나 쉼표(,)를 써서

다시 한번 풀이를 하는데

학생의 글에서는 그것이 없습니다.

비록 모두 다 아는 전문 용어라 할지라도,

일단 다 모른다 생각하고 풀이를 해 줘야 합니다.

 

그리고 영어를 쓸 때 한국어를 모두 다 옮겨서는 안됩니다.

최대한 간결하게 하되

그 영문장의 뉘앙스만큼은 충분히 풍길 수 있도록 하셔야 합니다.
